September Days

Lavender September

I love September. The hot summer days blend with the cooler nights and gradually bring us into the perfect mixture of early fall weather. Not too hot. Not too cold. Just right.

With cooler weather comes changes at our home. The air conditioning goes off and windows are opened again. The refreshing air blows through our cottage on the ridge. We love hearing the night sounds, especially the whippoorwill. Country living at it's best!

The oven gets more use on the cooler days. I just bought fresh sweet potatoes at the farmer's market. Can't wait to bake them and slather with real butter and just a bit of brown sugar and cinnamon. The taste of fall. Yum!

September is also a transitioning time for our lavender. We will harvest the last of it this week and will also give it a good pruning. Cutting it back is essential to making stronger plants. We will be adding more rock to help with drainage. Lavender does not like wet roots. Finally, we plan to take cuttings from each of our varieties to propagate. This month is the perfect time for working outside!

I'm sure, whatever your stage of life, September is a transitioning time for you too. The kids are back in school. Fall schedules of various kinds are starting up. But...before winter and holidays are upon us....allow yourselves to soak up September. While the flowers still cling to the vine, enjoy this unique summer-fall blend.

Wishing you simple joys in September...
